Reading very short scary stories online at night, or horror stories in general during periods of darkness, can be quite terrifying and yet so many people delight in doing just this.
Here, I bring you 28 very short scary stories to read at night and guarantee that, though each one is just a few words in a few sentences, they will scare the life out of you.
Only a handful of these stories are mine while the rest are actually part of books published by other authors like me, some of whom I know well. Note that I modified these a bit to make them unique. I love unique!

We’ll begin with one of mine now and then work our way to the bottom.
Short Story 1: Child Wolf
The full silver moon stood high above in a cloudless night sky when the leader of the wolf pack emerged from the den, sniffing the air and looking around for signs of danger but saw none. With a quick leap, he was out of the den and into the open, trotting quickly towards the far hills where a good kill was sure to be had.
Six other wolves emerged quickly to follow and three of them ran on their two hind legs to catch up, then went down on all fours like the rest of the wolves. Together, the pack continued on towards the hills.
Watching from his hiding place in the nearby rocks, the hunter suddenly realized that the three members of the wolf pack that had been terrorizing the village for two weeks were grown, human children.
Short Story 2: The Last Man
It was morning and the last man on earth was sitting quietly drinking a cup of black coffee. But suddenly, there was a sharp knock on the door.
Short Story 3: The Father’s Fear
I had just put my little daughter in her bed and tucked her in for the night with a soft kiss.
“Daddy, can you check under my bed for monsters?” she said.
I bent down and took a look only to find my daughter there fearfully whispering, “Daddy, there is somebody in my bed.
Short Story 4: The Computer God
A group of intelligent scientists had finally succeeded in building the ultimate computer that could solve any problem and answer any question.
The first question they asked it was… “Is there a God?”
“There is one now,” answered the computer.
Lightning abruptly struck the power cables in the lab and the computer could not be controlled again.
Short Story 5: The Screaming Girl
My daughter just won’t stop screaming and crying in the dead of the night. I got to her graveside each day to beg her to stop, but none of it helps.
Short Story 6: The Nightmare
The last thing I saw was my alarm clock flashing 12:16 before she pushed her long rotting fingernails through my heart, her other hand covered my mouth, muffling my screams.
I jerked awake and sat bolt upright in the bed, relieved it was only a dream. But as I glanced at my clock, it flashed 12:16, and then I heard my closet door crack open.

Short Story 8: The Family Reunion
Tired after a hard day at the office, I returned home to find my girlfriend cradling our little baby. I didn’t know which was more shocking, seeing my dead girlfriend and stillborn child or the realization that somebody had broken into my home to put them there.

I was having the most pleasant dream ever when what sounded like repeated hammering work me up. After that, I could barely hear the muffled sounds of dirt being poured the coffin over my own screams.

Nurse Tina’s short note read: Born 8 pounds, 12 ounces, 18 inches long, 32 fully formed white teeth, silent and always smiling.
Short Story 20: The Lovely Skin
The longer I wore it, the more it grew on me. The women had such lovely skin.

Short Story 22: The Door
The solid metal door had been torn clean off from the inside just recently. The steel hinges had been bent out of shape by the sheer power of whoever did it and there were visible claw marks on the inside, indicating it was either a person or an animal.
On the inside section of the metal door was the 120-year-old tomb of a man and it was now completely empty.
Short Story 23: On the Force
Being the first to respond and arrive at the scene of a ghastly car accident is always the most traumatic thing I see as a city police officer. But today, when the broken body of the little dead boy child strapped down in his car seat opened its eyes and giggled directly at me when I attempted to pull him out of the wreckage, I knew that today would definitely be my last day on the force.
Short Story 24: The Intruder
My wife shook me awake late last night to tell me that there was an intruder in our house and she was murdered by the intruder.
Short Story 26: The Warlock
Having the power to bring the dead back to life is something I have always loved. I particularly love standing over their grave, listening to them struggling desperately to get out.

When I started hearing again, I got into the habit of talking to myself to hear the sound of it. I stopped doing this yesterday after I started hearing replies to my conversation.
